Wind Power

BigToys is proud to be a participant in the Puget Sound Energy Green Power Program, one of the top 10 Green Power Programs in the country. We converted to wind power in 2008 as part of our ongoing commitment to reducing our environmental impact wherever and whenever possible.

Recycled Materials

BigToys' sturdy and durable steel and plastic structural system contains one of the highest percentages of recycled content available in playground equipment today. On average, our steel contains 78% U.S. made recycled materials, and we use 100% post-consumer high density polyethylene plastic in our decks, roofs, and enclosures, which helps keep over 1.5 million milk jugs out of landfills each year!

Renewable Resource

Trees are a sustainable resource that BigToys has helped manage for nearly four decades, and all wood products used in our playground equipment come from Forest Stewardship Council-certified producers. The Forest Stewardship Council is a stakeholder-owned system for promoting responsible management of the world's forests. Learn more at www.fscus.org/.

Furthermore, our wood contains no heavy metals and is arsenate-free. The conditioning process penetrates the wood under pressure to provide lasting durability, releases no air pollutants or wastewater, and uses recycled materials. The conditioning preservative won't leach out, won't dissolve, won't stain, and won't pollute. Conditioned wood lasts more than 5 times longer than unconditioned wood. Longer life means using less of our natural resources and further protecting your investment.

BigToys is also a proud member of the US Green Building Council (USGBC) which is a nonprofit organization that certifies sustainable businesses, homes, hospitals, schools, and neighborhoods. USGBC is dedicated to expanding green building practices and education, and its LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) green building rating system. Because of their high recycled content, BigToys structures can help contribute toward valuable LEED points on projects seeking LEED certification.

BigToys Contain No PVC

In 2004, BigToys removed all Polyvinyl Chloride (PVC) from our commercial playground equipment, replacing it where necessary with more eco-friendly alternatives. PVC is a material that represents health risks throughout its life cycle including manufacturing, use and disposal (1). Plasticized PVC is found on many playground structures and poses its greatest potential hazard to children in this form when burned as a result of vandalism. The burning of PVC coated components on commercial playground equipment can result in a hazardous concentration of toxic PCB’s and carcinogenic dioxin residue left behind on your playground (2).
